You are invited to a ZOOM presentation on by Eric Friesen  – on “Music as the Language of Faith”

Using recorded video examples, Eric will present the thesis that for many of us music is the most powerful language of faith, that the hymns we sing and the great music of our Christian tradition, is what often carries us through the wilderness parts of our Faith Journey.  Many will know of Eric through his work at the CBC but you will see in his short bio that he has wide interests and national and international recognition.  An experience not to be missed!!!

The ZOOM presentation will start on Tuesday April 26, 2022 at 1:00 pm. (note time change)

Signing into ZOOM will commence at 12:45 pm for a time of visiting.  At 1:00 pm we will have announcements and then introduce our speaker. 

Everyone from Sydenham St., Chalmers and Faith United Churches and friends are invited to attend.

Eric Friesen Bio

Eric Friesen is a broadcaster, writer and speaker on music, culture and faith in both Canada and the United States. He was a network host and executive for both CBC Radio and Minnesota Public Radio (NPR).

Eric also continues to serve a wide variety of major broadcast and cultural organizations in Canada, the US and internationally. One of his favorite occupations is to interview writers, musicians and anyone interested in our cultural life, and he has a particular interest in the intersection between music and literature. For example, in 2019 he interviewed the British novelist Ian McEwan on his love of music at Angela Hewitt’s Trasimeno International Music Festival in Umbria, Italy. He is also a regular interviewer at the Kingston Writersfest, most recently interviewing the Guy Vanderhaeghe on his new novel, August in Winter.

Eric is a member and Warden of St. George’s Anglican Church, Kingston, and an occasional speaker there, focusing on the relationship between the arts (music, literature, painting) and faith.

He has been hosting a book club at Collins Bay Institution (prison) in Kingston for some 12 years now, 8 years in the Medium section, and the past 4 years in the Maximum unit. This has been a transformative experience for him.

He is past chairman of The Honens International Piano Competition, based in Calgary, and currently a board member. He is also past Chairman of the Kingston Writersfest, a past board member of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, among many others.

Eric is a Member of the Order of Canada, and makes his home on Amherst Island, near Kingston, Ontario.
